2006 FA Cup Final

2006 the last trip to Cardiff...

More:

Operating in both multiple and top and tail modes, the old guard proved their worth keeping the sight and sound of classic traction alive in South Wales for another year.

50031 Hood & 50049 Defiance approach Newport West. Is hoped that these locomotives will be used on the Cardiff-Fishguard diagrams this summer.

As with last years FA Cup Final and Play Off games this year produced a variety of locomotive hauled traffic as is usual. However since EWS has less work for their modern fleet of class 67's, the type featured far more heavily than in previous years with many of the specials being 67 hauled.

The GM invasion aside, Arriva Trains put on a number of special shuttles using 50031 and 50049 and 37411 and 37425 in top and tail mode. In addition, one notable special was worked by "Blue Train" liveried 47709. With work on the new Wembly progressing, 2006 should be the last opportunity to savor the sights and sounds of real locomotives on service trains heading for these end of season games.
