In Focus

from around the country...

Focus on Cardiff Canton:

Cardiff Canton. The recent loss by EWS of its Mail traffic has seen the company rationalize its maintenance facilities. Among the more famous casualties is Cardiff Canton, which now only serves as a signing on point.

Stored at Margam:

EWS has recently been moving its stored locomotive fleet due to the closure of Cardiff Canton.

Latest Loco Hauled:

Locomotive haulage returns to the Welsh Valleys after a short period out of favor in the form of green liveried 37411.

EWS has reinstated class 60's to traffic to cover water canon duties over the forthcoming leaf fall season. Previous years has seen venerable class 37's used for these duties but not this year with so many of modern class 60'savailable. Livery Changes. One of the better liveries to emerge from the private operators is the version of maroon chosen by charter operator West Coast Railway Company. 57601 along with 47845 have both been treated to a repaint.

Class 56 Withdrawals

EWS has finally withdrawn its last remaining "Grids". With the remaining members of the fleet suffering from increasing engine hours and little maintenance it was inevitable that the end would come. However it came as a surprise to many that the end came so quickly with the many machines being simply turned off after EWS's new boss deemed them surplus to requirements.

2006 FA Cup. Cardiff once again played host to this years FA Cup final, perhaps for the last time. The occasion again produced a variety of locomotive hauled traction bringing eager football fans into the centre of Cardiff. 2006 Rugby Final. Straight after the FA Cup final Cardiff staged Rugby Unions annual showpiece. The class 50's were again in action but this time they are joined by a pair of class 47's and a stand in performance by 37425.
